[Discussion] Camila Review, Thoughts and First Impression

Hey Popheads. I originally wrote out a review but decided to delete it because I feel like most people don't like reading paragraphs so I condensed my points into a simplified version. For reference I have listened to the album about 10 times over the course of its release (It helps that it is 33 minutes long).

Weakest Songs Vocally:

  • All These Years

Overall Highlights:

  • Havana
  • Something's Gotta Give
  • Into It
  • Never Be the Same

Strengths of the Album:

  • Strong Replay-ability because of the short length.
  • Sounds very current and fresh, which makes it have a lot of mass appeal right now and positions herself as the "IT" girl.
  • Strong sense of identity in the current soundscape.
  • Sticky choruses and very cohesive.
  • Camila has a voice you want to sing along with when you hear her sing.

Shortcomings of the Album:

  • I do not see many people coming back to this album years from now besides a few songs.
  • Will future album releases rely on "current sounds" at the time and be able to have a tropical twist?
  • Some songs are filler and could be sung by any other pop artist.
  • Some weak and sloppily written verses.
  • The stripped back production some people can find boring / not engaging.

Overall:

Camila delivers a promising and solid debut in a world where pop's place is shakey and often filled with bloated messes that miss the mark on the current sound of pop. The album overall is filled A– List pop song writers and production, while Camila remains the star of the album and sells the sound of 2017 – 2018 pop convincingly with her own tropical spin.

3.5 / 5
